Between documentary and fiction, magic and realism, mountaintops and underground environments, 'A Cold Stargaze' is a reflection on the use of mountains as a technological foundation for encountering the cosmos. Inspired by alpinist-astronomer Joseph Vallot, a video portrays scientific practices in mountainous environments, questioning the legacy of scientific stargazing in high-altitude regions. Echoing scenes from the movie, hand-drawn diagrams etched in metal visualise scientific routines unfolding in underground labs. By exposing the limits of the scientific paradigm’s visual regime, the installation presents mountains as active agents and living systems.

From Deep Skies, Towards Deep Earth: Mountains as Cosmic Feelings, Cosmic Technologies, and Cosmic Sensoriums

Situated between cultural geography and media studies, this research analyzes the dual significance of mountains as tools for the encounter with the cosmos—as metaphysical axes connecting the terrestrial to the otherworldly and as scientific instruments enabling clearer observations of celestial bodies. Perceived as places of connection between the terrestrial and the cosmic, between the visible and the invisible, mountains seem to have the power to shape human experience and anchor imagination, helping spatialize invisibilities and concretize cosmic visions. Through case studies from the Alpine arc during the Enlightenment, the contested site of Mauna Kea, and the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, this work explores the historical evolution of mountains in relation to cosmological inquiry across diverse geographies, cultures, and time spans.

Shaped Views: A Digital Exploration of the Apuan Alps

The Apuan Alps, shaped by relentless human action, are symbolic places where the physical landscape is constantly consumed and reshaped, much like digital spaces on social media. Portraying mountains through a reorganization of online content, this project reflects on how digital geotagged images multiply and transform the perception of physical space. In this fragmented digital geography, the once-solid landscape is re-materialized as a virtual entity, where the act of capturing and sharing replaces direct experience.

As a result of a 2-day workshop with Benjamin McMillan, the printed editorial features content automatically downloaded from various websites analyzing the symbolism of rock drawings in the Camonica Valley. The fanzine's design was created manually during the workshop and later transported into a digital format for final production.

The methods around space exploration echo those of Land Colonization on Planet Earth.
As soon as we began to see space as a viable destination, we started to use it, and see it, for human purposes: firstly political, and then also for economic and social purposes. Often associated with the discovery of the New World of Columbus, space is and has been seen by man as a Terra Nullius: an empty, uninhabited place. ‘Interplanetary Echoes of a Quiet Land’ reflects on the trope of sovereignty on the Moon’s geography, developing a photographic inquiry and a speculative fiction into its disappearance due to excessive human extraction.

The Parametric Truth Lab is a space to spend time with software without its productivity as a priority. Instead, the lab questions truths that are established through software’s parameters. The lab operates with an expanded understanding of software literacy. Designers use software to create narratives, transform research, and communicate information. What worlds are you building, with what tools? How might those tools influence these worlds unknowingly or intentionally? With software everywhere, the lab documents what and who is automated, computed, and digitised.

The act of measurement is not neutral, and every technology of measurement and classification legitimates certain forms of knowledge and experience, while rendering others invisible. Interposing such self-tracking technologies between us and our bodies, in fact, means accepting as valid the metrics, statistics, and parameters chosen by those who programmed such technology. We tend, on the other hand, to accept as objective, scientific, true everything that is expressed in data, numbers, graphs. However, behind the construction of data and their representations there are always choices, which ultimately correspond to strategies for constructing truth.

Envisioning Black Holes

On April 10, 2019 the team of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) released an unprecedented image of the supermassive black hole at the centre of galaxy Messier 87, a visual evidence of what has, until now, been invisible. To be precise, this image does not technically show visual evidence of a black hole, for as we saw (or perhaps didn’t see), black holes are, by definition, completely dark incredibly dense objects from which even light cannot escape. Instead, the image shows a shadow, a boundary of perceptibility that manifests in darkness, forever exceeding human representational schema. It symbolises a horizon—a limit case—for human sense-making apparatuses. No instrument, no technological advance can ever probe the limit of the event horizon, because physically nothing exists within it.
